Call for Short Papers

2025 is the 1700th anniversary of the so-called Nicene Creed, and the Alcuin Club is marking this anniversary in its annual Study Day. The Niceno-Constantinopolitan Creed, as it is properly called, not only encapsulates the universal faith of the Church, but is a significant component in the worship of the Church. In the Communion service of the Book of Common Prayer the Nicene Creed functions as a response to the reading of the Gospel, and in the Common Worship Communion it follows the sermon to serve as a summation of the faith that is proclaimed and is to be lived. The keynote address at the Study Day, ‘The Nicene Creed, Catechesis, and the Liturgy’ will be delivered by the Revd Dr Matthew Salisbury, the National Liturgy Adviser for the Church of England, and in the afternoon, we would like to hear two other short papers before the Alcuin AGM.

And so, we invite proposals for two short papers to critically engage with these themes. Papers may explore a theme related to the use of the Creed and other Affirmations of Faith in worship. There are a vast range of possible trajectories and questions to explore around these themes, and we look forward to receiving proposals from both established scholars and practitioners at all stages of their careers. PowerPoint will be available for the presentations.

Selected papers will need to be presented in 20 minutes, and presenters are asked to be present in person at the Study Day at Christ Church on 2 June 2025 and to be willing to field questions during a short period for discussion after the presentation. Proposals of up to 300 words should be sent to [email protected] by 2 APRIL 2025. You will be notified if your paper has been selected by 14 April 2025.
