It is commonplace that our century has seen an explosion of liturgical development in all of western Christianity, development encouraged by our extended knowledge of the worship of the early Church and by appreciation of the understanding of the Church as the Body of Christ that breathes in those early documents. This development has been welcome, but with it have come new questions regarding the maintenance of liturgical identity, responsible formation of Christians as those who share in the priesthood of Christ, and the impact of that sharing on our understanding of the shape of the liturgical community.

Sixteen liturgical scholars of the Anglican Communion met together in Brixen (Bressanone) in northern Italy over two days, 24-25 August 1987, at the conclusion of the 1987 Congress of Societas Liturgica to discuss the formative role of the liturgy in the life of the People of God, under the theme, ‘Liturgical Formation and Education’.
