Cremation is now so widespread in Britain that a short study is called for as a means of stimulating discussion among professionals and interested parties at large. It is an area requiring research to guarantee that issues are taken beyond the local level and further than story and anecdote. This at least is what I have attempted in the following pages and with the help of material from two major research projects. Very much more material exists than is mentioned here and this will be analyzed and published in due course.
