This study presents the first English translation of Proclus’ MystagogicaI Homily. Proclus, archbishop of Constantinople 434-447, is much better known for his sermons in support of the epithet ‘theotokos’ for Mary in opposition to Nestorius, and he was much admired in his time as a popular and effective preacher. This homily makes no great claim as a work of theological complexity, nor, given Proclus’ reputation as a preacher, is it particularly remarkable. It is, though, the only example of mystagogy from the Eastern capital and usefully fills a gap in our knowledge of the city’s initiation rites.
