The Book of Common Prayer and its Commentators is an illuminating exploration of the rich history and profound impact of the Book of Common Prayer (BCP) from its inception in 1549 to the early 20th century. This meticulously researched volume delves into the lives and works of key commentators who have shaped the understanding and use of the BCP over centuries. Jasper’s narrative weaves together theological insights, historical contexts, and biographical sketches, offering readers a comprehensive view of how the BCP has influenced Anglican worship and identity.

The Book of Common Prayer has been at the heart of the devotional life of the Church of England for more than six hundred years, prompting what Geoffrey Cuming has called ‘a new species of literature’—the Prayer Book Commentary. Written mostly by parish priests, members of cathedral chapters or bishops, these commentaries combine often profound learning with pastoral devotion, and a vision of the church as both catholic and apostolic. Many of these were widely used in their day, often in the context of disputes and divisions, and have been largely forgotten. Taken together they illustrate the theology and pastoral wisdom that has sustained the Church of England for centuries.

David Jasper is Emeritus Professor at the University of Glasgow where he was formerly Professor of Literature and Theology. He was Changjiang Chair Professor at Renmin University of China, Beijing. He is Convenor of the Doctrine Committee of the Scottish Episcopal Church and Canon Theologian of St Mary’s Cathedral, Glasgow.
