The collect has been a distinctive feature of Anglican liturgy for over four hundred years. The number in use in the revised liturgies of the Communion is enormous. For the first time they are gathered together, indexed by first line and key words, and related to their sources.

Martin R. Dudley is lecturer in Anglican studies and liturgy at the Simon of Cyrene Theological Institute, London, and vicar of Saint George’s Church, Owlsmoor, Berkshire, in the United Kingdom. He writes extensively on liturgy and sacramental theology and is secretary of the Alcuin Club.
