Joint Liturgical studies 20
There is no one origin of the Roman Rite. We could include Hippolytus and discuss his connections, or speculate on the very early prayers underlying the Roman Canon. Or there is the matter of the period much later, when the Franks and Germans, having adopted and recast the Roman liturgy, brought it back to Rome, where the popes gradually adopted it in turn. The range of this book has to be much narrower. Over a particular period the prayers and liturgical forms come into historical view, and we can see them taking on their classic shape. That is the subject of this book.
